Dr. Buddy Smith has taught mathematics at Ozarks since 1980, serving as chairman of the Sciences and Mathematics Division from 1991 to 1997. In talking to him about his career choice, you can tell Dr. Smith is happy with the decisions he has made -- when asked what he would change if he could be 18 again, Dr. Smith says without hesitation, "Nothing!" His decision to pursue a career teaching mathematics in a university setting was based on his love of mathematics. Dr. Smith says simply, "I enjoy teaching at this level." The small, rural atmosphere of Ozarks and the surrounding town of Clarksville also appeal to Dr. Smith who says, "We don't have big-city problems here at Ozarks."
Dr. Smith says that during his time as a professor, his students have shown him one very important thing -- that everyone is different! He says he, in turn, hopes that he can instill in his students the importance of thinking critically and to solve problems. When asked what one thing he would like for students to remember about Ozarks, he replied, "When students leave Ozarks I hope they take with them respect for this college and for the people who work here."
In his time away from the classroom, Dr. Smith takes advantage of another benefit of the rural setting around the University -- he loves hunting and fishing and a variety of other outdoor activities available within a few minutes drive of the Ozarks campus.
