Biology at Ozarks

Major

Students who choose to major in biology may earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology by completing coursework as described below.

Requirements for a Major

A bachelor of science in biology requires the following:

Biology Core
BIO 1214, BIO 1324, BIO 2014, BIO 2124, BIO 3024, BIO 4004

Students must take at least three of the six Biology Options courses.

Biology Options:
BIO 3234, BIO 4234, BIO 3134, BIO 4024, BIO 3444, BIO 4543

A student may petition to consider substituting certain appropriate biology courses occasionally offered at Ozarks or those in marine biology offered at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory for Senior Research and/or Biology Options. Petition must be made before the course is taken to assure consideration.

Additional Requirements
CHM 1014, CHM 1024, CHM 2104 or CHM 3014, One mathematics course above MTH 1033, One Physics course

A bachelor of arts in biology requires the following:
BIO 1104, BIO 1324, BIO 2014, BIO 2124, BIO 3024, Sixteen hours of upper-level biology electives (excluding Tutorial Practicum). In addition, each student seeking a bachelor of arts in biology must complete a minor in an area other than the natural sciences.

Prospective students are encouraged to view Ozarks suggested eight semester plans before pursuing a degree in Biology.

Teaching Licensure

Students pursuing a bachelor of science in life science may seek teacher licensure by fulfilling the following specific requirements:
BIO 1324, BIO 2014, BIO 2124, BIO 3024, BIO 3434, BIO 3444
Three hours or more of upper-level biology electives
CHM 1024, CHM 3014 or CHM 2104, PHY 2014, PHY 2024, One mathematics course above MTH 1033

Students seeking licensure in this area are required to fulfill their Natural Science requirements with BIO 1214 Principles of Biology I, and CHM 1014 General Chemistry I. In addition to these requirements, the following professional education sequence must be completed:
EDU 2003, EDU 3053, EDU 3312, EDU 4312, EDU 4403, EDU 3083 or EDU 4443, SPE 2013
