Middle-Level Education at Ozarks

Major

Language Arts and Social Studies Emphasis

Middle Level Education majors are required to take a concurrent major in a liberal arts content discipline. Education majors seeking certification in Middle Level Language Arts and Social Studies content must choose from the following concurrent majors: History and Literature, English, and History or Social Science. Middle Level Education students seeking licensure in Arkansas are required to take a course in Arkansas history. At Ozarks, HIS 3003, Arkansas History, will fulfill both a Social Analysis Distribution requirement as well as the Arkansas Department of Education requirement for Arkansas History.

Students seeking licensure in Middle Level Language Arts and Social Studies with concurrent majors in History and Literature and Social Science are required to take both PLS 2013, American National Government, and HIS 2013, American History to 1860. Students seeking licensure in Middle Level Language Arts and Social Studies with concurrent majors in History or English are required to take either PLS 2013, American National Government or HIS 2013, American History to 1860. World Civilization I and World Civilization II are strongly encouraged. Middle Level majors are also encouraged to fulfill the Global Awareness Distribution requirement with Human / Cultural or Regional Geography, and the Natural Science requirements with Biology Concepts and Earth Science, (regardless of concurrent major).

Middle Level majors must take PHE 1411, Rhythmic Activities and Lead-Up Games, a course that also will complete one of the 4 required physical education activity courses in the Ozarks' General Education Program.

Mathematics and Science Emphasis

Middle Level Education majors are required to take a concurrent major in a liberal arts content discipline. Education majors seeking certification in Middle Level Mathematics and Science content must choose from the following concurrent majors: Composite Science, Biology, or Mathematics. Middle Level Education students seeking licensure in Arkansas are required to take a course in Arkansas history. At Ozarks, HIS 3003, Arkansas History, will fulfill both a Social Awareness Distribution Requirement as well as the Arkansas Department of Education requirement for Arkansas History.

Middle Level majors also are encouraged to fulfill their Global Awareness Distribution requirement with Human / Cultural Geography or Regional Geography and their Natural Science requirements with Biology Concepts (concurrent Composite Science major and Mathematics major) or Principles of Biology (concurrent Biology major) and Earth Science (regardless of concurrent major).

Middle Level majors must take PHE 1411, Rhythmic Activities and Lead-Up Games, a course that also will complete one of the four required physical education activity courses in the Ozarks’ General Education Program.
