GO! Opportunities Grant
On August 28, 2007, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe announced a new program to help Arkansas high-school graduates with financial need pay for college.
The GO! Opportunities Grant is a state-funded college grant program "based solely on financial need." Under the program, qualifying college freshmen who are full-time students can receive $1,000 a year, and part-time students can receive $500 a year.
Recipients must maintain a 2.0 grade-point average and certify that they are "drug-free."
To qualify for a grant, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
- Be an Arkansas resident for at least 12 months before applying
- Graduate from an Arkansas high school or have a General Education Development degree. Applicants with GED degrees must be between 16 and 18 years old
- Enroll at an eligible Arkansas higher-education institution within one year of high-school graduation or successful completion of the GED test
Legislators approved $18.4 million to fund the program over the next two years. The governor's office said that more money from AT&T and The Charles A. Frueauff Foundation will help promote the program statewide.
Grants will be administered through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.
